Study and work in the cross-border area: a focus on 'Student Work'
Slovenia is becoming more and more attractive to foreign students, their share increasing year by year. While four years ago they represented 4.5 per cent of the student population, today this share has more than doubled.
The largest share of foreign students is in Primorska (Slovenian Littoral), part of the EURADRIA region.
The largest number of foreign students in terms of total number of students in the Republic of Slovenia is found in Univerza na Primorskem (University of Primorska). Four years ago, the share of foreign students was about 12 per cent, in 2020/2021 it rose to 15.5 per cent of the total number of enrolled students.
The share of foreign students, including students coming to Slovenia through short- and medium-term experiences, is growing, thus also contributing to strengthening one of the strategic priorities of the University of Primorska. In the current academic year (22/23), approximately one-fifth of the regularly enrolled students come from abroad: 875 are studying at the first level, 199 at the second level and 48 at the third level, doctoral level.
At the conclusion of the current project activities, a Guide will be made available to support current and potential students, through which the procedures for inclusion in the school system will be highlighted, providing specific information on the procedures for enrolling in the educational cycles and pathways, also with respect to the support provided in the cross-border area by the Euradria Infodesk regarding social security and taxation.
At the same time, the Slovenian phenomenon of “student work”, as a form of temporary work carried out by young people, will be highlighted.
The contribution of this guide will be aimed at highlighting rights and obligations, raising awareness of current and potential students with regard to training opportunities and elements of the types of contracts they can use within the cross-border area.
